Troubleshooting

Common issues and solutions for Meridian

This page covers common issues you might encounter while using Meridian and how to resolve them.

Sync Issues

Connection not syncing Check your internet connection and make sure you can reach other websites. If your connection is working, try disconnecting and reconnecting the affected account in Settings > Connections.

Data not appearing If you have just set up a new device or connected a new account, the initial sync may take some time depending on the amount of data. Check the sync progress indicator in the toolbar. You can also verify your sync interval in Settings > Sync.

Duplicate items Occasionally, duplicates can appear during sync. These will resolve automatically on the next sync cycle. If duplicates persist, try triggering a manual sync from Settings > Sync.

Connection Problems

OAuth token expired If a connected account stops updating, the authorization token may have expired. Go to Settings > Connections, select the affected account, and re-authorize it.

Provider authorization failed If you are unable to connect a provider, check your account settings on the provider’s side. Ensure that third-party app access is enabled and that your account is in good standing.

iCloud or Fastmail password rejected iCloud and Fastmail require app-specific passwords for third-party applications. Make sure you are using an app-specific password generated from your provider’s security settings, not your regular account password.

AI Not Working

Apple Silicon required Meridian’s on-device AI requires Apple Silicon (M1 or later). The AI features are not available on Intel-based Macs.

Model still downloading The AI model is downloaded in the background after you install Meridian. Check the download progress in Settings > AI. The model is several hundred megabytes and may take a few minutes on slower connections.

Model fails to load If the AI model fails to load or stops responding, try restarting Meridian. If the issue persists, you can re-download the model from Settings > AI.

Performance

Slow initial sync Initial sync is expected to take longer for large mailboxes with thousands of emails. Meridian processes and encrypts each item locally, so the first sync is more resource-intensive than subsequent incremental syncs.

Search feels slow The search index builds in the background after sync. If you have just completed a large sync, search performance will improve once indexing finishes.

GPU and resource usage The AI model uses your GPU for inference and should not impact general app performance. If you notice unusual resource usage, check Activity Monitor for any issues and try restarting the app.

Account Issues

Can’t sign in Double-check your email and password. If you are sure your credentials are correct, try resetting your password. Note that a password reset will trigger key rotation on all of your connected devices.

Forgot password Use the password reset flow on the sign-in screen. After resetting your password, your encryption keys will be rotated and all connected devices will be prompted to re-sync. You will not lose any data.
